Gas line work and why the license matters

  • by
Field notesThis is the part of plumbing where the paperwork is the point.

What a licensed plumber is required to do

Size the line for the appliance load rather than for whatever pipe is closest. Install a shutoff and a sediment trap at the appliance. Pressure test the system. Pull a permit and get an inspection where the city requires one. None of these is optional and none of them is where you save money.

Sizing, specifically

A range, a water heater, a wall heater and an outdoor grill all pull different volumes. Run a line sized for one and add another appliance to it and both underperform. Half the gas complaints we see are sizing problems wearing an appliance problem’s clothes.

Testing

Every line we run or repair gets pressure tested. There is no partial pass. Either the system holds or it does not, and if it does not, the work is not finished.

What to do if you smell gas

Leave. Do not switch anything on or off, including lights. Call from outside. Then call a plumber. That order matters.

Checking a license

Texas Master Plumber licenses are public. Ours is M-44741, held by Norman Alambar, and you can look it up with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Anybody who gets defensive when you ask for a number is telling you something.

Questions about any of this on your own property? (940) 231-5706 reaches Norman Alambar directly, Texas Master Plumber M-44741, working Krugerville and seventy-five towns across North Texas.
